Pengertian Descriptive Text

Descriptive text adalah jenis teks yang mendeskripsikan orang, tempat, binatang atau suatu benda. Misalnya mendeskripsikan tentang sosok yang dikagumi, tempat wisata, binatang peliharaan dan lainnya.

Karakteristik descriptive text meliputi:

1. Social function/purpose of the text (fungsi/tujuan komunikatif dari teks ini)

Social function/purpose of the text (fungsi/tujuan)

Social function/purpose of descriptive text is to describe particular person, place or thing.

Fungsi/tujuan komunikatif dari descriptive text adalah untuk mendeskripsikan atau menggambarkan orang, tempat atau benda tertentu.

Generic structure of the text (struktur)

Struktur penulisan descriptive text adalah:

• Identification: mengidentifikasi topik yang akan dideskripsikan.
• Description: mendeskripsikan hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan topik tersebut.

Language features of the text (ciri kebahasaan)

Ciri-ciri dari descriptive text antara lain:

• Present tense, menggunakan kata kerja bentuk present, seperti my aunt likes cooking, it has two doors, dsb.
• State verb, menggunakan kata kerja statif yakni menggambarkan suatu keadaan, seperti think, believe, have, belong, love, hate, dsb.
• Adjective, menggunakan kata sifat, seperti long, beautiful, tremendous, dsb.
• Adverb, menggunakan kata keterangan seperti loudly, fluently, carelessly, fast, dsb.

Contoh Descriptive Text

Berikut adalah contoh descriptive text:

Amelia, My Aunt Of all my relatives, I like my aunt Amelia the best. She's my mother's youngest sister. She hasn't been married and she lives alone in a small village near Bath. She is in her late forties but she's still quite young in spirit. She has curly hair and deep blue eyes. She has a kind face, and when you meet her, the first thing you notice about her is her warm, friendly smile. She is the the kind of person you can always go to if you have a problem. Aunt Amelia likes reading and gardening, and she likes to take her cat, Cathy, for long walks in the park. She's very active person. Either she's making something or doing something to help others. She does the shopping for some of the old people in the village. She's extremely generous, but not very tolerant of people who don't agree with her.
